Non-Partisan Political Information For News Junkies
by Angela Briggs
People looking for non-partisan political information have a real research issue on their hands. Since this type of content is composed of facts, there is a scarcity of this in all areas and the media is simply one of them. It is harder to accept in the fourth estate because it used to be so easy to find this reporting but, today, it is almost non existent.
When people go to competing factions for this type of factual data, they are being misled. Not presenting facts is one of the worst things that can be done. There are more communication platforms which should make it easier to get the facts out, yet, both sides depend, largely, on misinformation and broad generalizations. They do this to avoid looking like they are for or against anything.
Politicians, looking for acceptance for some of their ideas, have resorted to weighting their thoughts with what they think the voters want to hear. This has resulted in waging a very partisan war on the other side because of some perceived slight or unwillingness to go along. Innocuous comments are thrown off as simply bumper sticker politics and no real information is imparted, only sound bites or pull quotes.
Health care talking points would be a good example of this unbalanced data. Reciting facts that would stand up to any scrutiny is not what is in their best interests. Instead of the listing of numbers dealing with how many people are satisfied with their insurance, we get the very partisan explaining that we do not know what we are talking about. This misguided information would have us believe that, because of 30 million people, we need to change the health care insurance industry for 317 million people.
When all of the content presented is emotional it is a good indicator of partisan rhetoric. Take the example of gun control. The assertion that any gun held by any legal resident means just one more dangerous gun that is on the streets is an emotional appeal. It says nothing about what should actually be done because it would cause these proponents to deal with mental health issues, not law abiding citizens.
One of the places where you think you would be able to find truly factual subject matter should be a debate between the sides. You might think that if you hear one side and then the other side it would balance out. This is not the case either because one side does not wish to appear to be mad at the other side. The other side does not wish you to know what they really think.
There are quite a number of websites that will claim this center of the road as far as information is concerned. It is fairly easy to analyze these sites as they will almost always give themselves away. Advertising one side over the other, in any issue, will allow you to make the connection and know where they come from.
Non-partisan political information is the recitation of facts. They may be good looking and they may be quite ugly. Making them pretty for public consumption is simply lying. Doing this makes for incomplete data, serves to make the speaker look better and does not help the conversation proceed properly.
