A doctrine of Buddhism, Hinduism and tribal societies, reincarnation also has believers living in the Western World. To those who believe, this concept makes as much sense as the Christian doctrine of Jesus dying on the Cross and coming back before rising to Heaven. Spiritually, both are equally possible.

Those who do not accept the premise include Christians, Jewish people and those of the Islamic faith. Some branches of each, however, do accept the concept as truth. For example, the Kaballah, made up of Jewish individuals, does accept the idea of reincarnation.

There are reports of specific cases recorded by medical and philosophical experts which seem to support it. One well-known case is the one recorded about a little girl in Ireland. A Madison, Wisconsin housewife was hypnotized and allegedly her past life in Ireland and her rebirth in the US, 59 years later in 1923, was backed up by memories of that earlier life.

Morey Bernstein, the person who conducted the hypnosis sessions, later compared details with those that pertained to the life of Bridey Murphy. Many of them were a perfect match. Some of the details were minor incidents that happen during daily living and could not have been known by a woman living in modern day Wisconsin.

There are many children who tell their parents about memories of another life without provocation. A researcher, Dr. Ian Stevenson interviewed over 3000 of these children. Following the same stringent protocol, he investigated all the information.

Step one was collecting data from a child remembering a past life. Step two was identifying the facts of the life of the deceased individual the child remembered being. In the final step he made every effort to match the memories to the events in the life of the deceased, including comparing birth defects, birthmarks and healed injuries that could be verified through medical records.

His purely scientific verifications ruled out other explanations. He investigated cases of children from many countries. There are 3000 cases he has verified. The data supports this concept as factual.

Dr. Stevenson is a reputable physician with irrefutable credentials. He is a licensed psychiatrist who worked in that capacity at the University of Virginia, in two different high level positions. He has written on professional topics other than the supernatural.

The Buddhist religion has a different concept. It teaches there is no eternal soul. There is instead a stream of consciousness that links one life to a successive one. After death, an individual undergoes rebirth. In the various sects the belief is in from five to ten realms of existence that each person goes through.

In the traditional practice of Buddhism there are ten realms of existence. Each is classified from depraved man at the lowest realm to Buddha at the highest. As the individual progresses up the ladder, he acquires greater compassion in his quest to achieve enlightenment.

Any individual can choose whether to believe in reincarnation or not. The belief can be based on science or religion. The concept of another life after the current one is a comforting one. It is merely a theory though, as is religion. There is no solid proof of the existence of either concept.
