The Christmas season is fast approaching, and what better gift to get for a loved one than a doll. But, what kind should you get? And, after deciding the type of doll, what material should it be made of? We'll take a look at the options and give you information to make an informed decision.
The first step in deciding the best doll for your needs is to consider the age of the person you're shopping for. If they are adult, they will most likely not want it to play with, but rather, sit on a shelf to look at. Unless that is, they want one that can be carried like a real baby. If not, they will not necessarily need it to be made of a material that is durable. Also it doesn't have to feel soft in the hands either.
In this case, you'll most likely want to get a doll made of vinyl. These dolls are virtually indestructible. Also, these days, most are made of a soft grade vinyl that feels nice in their hands. You will want to steer away from dolls made of artists resin or porcelain. Artists resin, although less expensive is hard and could break. It works well for collector's dolls, but not so much for holding or playing. Porcelain dolls are in the similar category.
The most popular doll types for young girls are American Girl type dolls and newborn or realistic dolls. American Girls dolls are 18 inch dolls that are hugely popular. They are though, pretty pricey. But, there are some good knock off brands that are also very nice. You should investigate Journey Girl dolls. There are others, too. Either way, there many online stores where she can get additional doll clothes for very reasonable prices.
The other option is to get a newborn or realistic doll. If you haven't seen one of these, you've got to. When I say realistic, I mean it. They look just like newborn babies. And yes, some of them are even ugly. That is, if you think that some newborns are ugly like I do. Regardless, these dolls are finely crafted to have all the characteristics of actual babies. In fact, most people have to do double takes to see if they are real or not.
An entirely different direction to look is a collector's doll. Keep in mind that these are not for playing, but rather to sit on a shelf and look beautiful, with an exception. These may be made of porcelain, resin, or vinyl. Porcelain and resin are the two types that you definitely don't want to play with. Vinyl dolls could double as both a play doll and a decorative doll. That might be the way to go.
