Haiti Mission Disaster Management Giving Hope
by Amanda Bean
The state stands in the Caribbean region, sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Republic of Santo Domingo. Being the poorest country in the Western region with over eighty percent of its population living below the poverty level, this state seems to have lost its place in the global hemisphere. The Haiti mission plan by international representative and United Nation sought to bring the country back to its feet.
The disaster that hit this country was one of the most dangerous kinds ever reported in its entire history. It actually led to the loss of many lives and the destruction of valuable property. What makes it even worst is that the fatalities that took place happened within a very small, precisely within 100KM within the region of Port-au-Prince, killing about twenty-five percent of the entire population in this region.
International bodies and state representatives such as the United Nations, the Government in the United States, the European Commission had to take part to help the country in such an hour of need. It is obvious that the earth tremor that occurred in this place did not only kill many but also left many people homeless and without hope. When the representatives came to this country, they had a common goal, to address the material and social requirements of its people.
They made sure that these people got enough food and water supply wherever they were. In addition, the missionary team provided them with temporary shelters where they could lay their head as renovation progressed. The crew also took the initiative of addressing matters of hygiene among the people.
There was, in addition, the need to have a control over disaster vulnerability and poverty in this state. For this reason, the United Nations Environmental Program came up with a program by the name the Haiti Renovation Initiative. There is hope that the plan will help to restore the ecosystem of the country and bring and bring about an improvement in the general well being of the people and the state at large.
The series of disasters that took place in this country left a lot of waste that required proper management. Essentially, the debris requires collection, sorting, treatment and proper disposal. The team that came to help in the management of disasters, therefore, became an integral part in disaster management. Most non-governmental organizations became part of this disaster management program.
The most common debris discovered after the disaster took place were those from buildings and construction sites. The most common forms of the construction materials whose sample report were collected were reinforced concrete structure and the hollow bricks. A collection of unbroken hollowed brinks for reuse took place and the inhabitants took the initiative to collect reinforcing bars as scrap irons.
There is a need to prevent high magnitudes like these in future but to realize this, the Haiti mission crew dealing with disaster management must be ready to ask and answer tough and deep questions about the country. The possibility of another danger, of course of a huge magnitude, in this state may take place at any time and cause many deaths, perhaps more in figure than what is already lost. People in authority should know the actual step to take to save people and the resources of the country.
