Why Parenting Young Adults Can Be Confusing

by Saleem Rana

The Executive Director of VIVE Rohini Ross was interviewed by Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio Show about the perplexing problem of parenting young people. The host of the show, Lon Woodbury has helped struggling teens and their families since 1984. He is the founder of the famous Woodbury Reports. "The Parent Choices for Struggling Teens" radio show was sponsored by Father Flanagan's Boys Town in Nebraska.

Visitor Background

Rohini Ross, MA, MFT, serves as a clinical supervisor and is the Executive Director at Vive, which is headquartered in Colorado. She is a licensed Marriage and Family therapist in the state of California and adjunct faculty at the University of Santa Monica and holds a degree in Counseling Psychology with a Certificate in Consciousness Health and Healing from the University of Santa Monica. VIVE helps young adults who are stuck and need help in transitioning to adulthood.

Concepts for Handling the Confusing Problem of Parenting Young Adults

The guest went over just how parents are affected by their grownup child's problems with developing and functioning in society as independent adults. She also offered advice for parents who are having a hard time with the problems arising from their child's struggle with maturing into responsible adulthood.

Why are young people feeling overwhelmed? It's because they don't understand the best ways to create competency and self-confidence in the world. Instead, they are stuck in worry and anxiety, which might commonly be misinterpreted as an absence of inspiration by bewildered parents. When parents step in to aid their child, they actually deprive them of a chance to develop on their own.

Moreover, financial uncertainty makes it difficult for young people to set out by themselves. Often enough, the cost of living exceeds just what can be earned from working hard at a routine job. What's more, young people might have fallen into bad habits - like substance abuse or a computer gaming addiction. Lon touched on how video games may be an issue, as they supply an ideal emotional alternative to a wide range of reality experiences. While his guest acknowledged this, she talked about how the satisfaction gained from computer games has to be fulfilled in healthier ways, in ways that could provide meals and shelter.

This whole idea of failure to launch is a genuine social concern and it's vital for parents to look into exactly how they can set up healthy behavior in their adult children. Perplexed parents of youthful adults have to learn how to communicate better and get help from others, like family members, relatives, and psychological professionals.
